The Lamaze Method
The Lamaze method teaches relaxation and breathing techniques that can be used during labor and childbirth. The method is taught to both the mother and a partner, who will act as labor coach and give emotional support during the birthing process.
Lamaze instructors teach a series of classes for women and their partners during the last trimester of pregnancy. The classes focus on the normal birth process.
Women and their partners learn ways to help labor progress and to reduce pain and fear. Lamaze instructors teach breathing techniques and relaxation skills that can be used during pregnancy and throughout life in times of stress. Women and their partners are taught communication skills, and they practice various positions that can help labor progress naturally. Partners learn massage techniques, and comfort measures such hydrotherapy, use of heat and cold, and use of pressure are discussed.
Instructors discuss innovations in maternity care, such as use of a doula or professional labor support. The classes cover complications of pregnancy, methods of anesthesia, and different medical procedures. The classes also teach what to expect after the baby is born and ways of getting breastfeeding off to a good start.
